Makeup Removal: Micellar Or Balms?

Good week? Hope you have been making the most of the lovely weather this week! In fact.. today (Sunday) is a right scorcher.. BBQ’s & cold drinks at the ready I think! Honestly.. the sun puts me in SUCH a good mood… I am sure you can only imagine how EXCITED I AM to go on holiday (ahem… 5 weeks.. but whose counting?)

Now.. this post was one of those *OMG literally just popped into my head* type moments.. There I was removing my makeup, pondering life as you do.. when I thought to myself.. “Hmmm… I use quite a few different things to take all my makeup off with.. some depending on how lazy I feel.. others because I think they are fun to use” (you will see what I mean below ha!).. AND there we have it… new blog post idea!

So… I use two main types of makeup removers.. cleansing balms and micellar waters. I stay away from wipes … they are EVIL! No matter how tired I am .. I never use wipes… in fact I don’t even own a pack ha! I thought I would talk you through the different makeup removers I use.. the pros & cons.. and also which is my favourite (and I DO have one!).

Cleansing Balms – When I Want to Have Fun Removing Makeup

Now.. I don’t know about you… but some nights I actually REALLY enjoy taking my makeup off.. I use those 15 minutes to really get my skin feeling as clean as possible.. and just to make the experience as “fun” as possible. You are probably thinking, Saira.. what on earth are you going on about, “fun”? Well… I am talking about the amazing things that are Cleansing Balms.. these are solid, rich cleansers that melt to an oil when applied to your face. They work by breaking down all the makeup, dirt & grime so it is easy to remove.. and they also “grab” all the excess oil and sebum (ew) on your skin so you are left with clear skin that is less likely to break out!

How do you use them?

I usually use a 50p sized amount and warm it up between my fingers first.. then I start on with my face.. I just massage it all over the face and let the balm work its magic in melting off all my makeup. Then.. I go over my eyes and do exactly the same thing. This is where the fun factor comes in guys.. if you ever want to scare your husband/partner… use cleansing balms. I cannot even tell you the look of shock on hubby’s face when I used one of these for the first time ha! In fact.. if you watched my first vlog.. I actually show you it in action! Then.. you would use a muslin or a regular face cloth (I love my £1.50 ones from Primark.. they work a treat!), and just wash it all off your face!

They are (almost) suitable for all skin types… they are SO SO gentle so would be perfect for those with sensitive skin. Also.. I have oily skin and they work a dream for me… I know what so many people think.. how does oil/oil work? But it just DOES… My skin is never left feeling greasy!

They add a gorgeous “glow” to your face… it must be all those wonderful, natural ingredients in them!

Nothing removes waterproof mascara like these babies do

It almost feels like you are having a facial when using these… I think it is all that face massaging you do!

I have not found this problem… but for those with VERY oily skin… they may find their skin to be quite greasy after using these

It does take slightly longer than other forms of makeup removal.. especially as I personally like to double cleanse too

My Faves

Body Shop Chamomile Cleansing Butter

This is my latest cleansing balm that I have been using and I literally love it so so much! It is a solid white balm that you just rub between your fingers and apply to your face! It has a gorgeous, light, fresh fragrance and is so gentle on your eyes. I find it works so well and quickly.. and my skin is so soft afterwards. My skin does not feel greasy after, in fact it feels so soft and it actually has a beautiful glow! I usually always double cleanse with this… however a few nights ago I just used this and my skin actually felt like it was thoroughly cleansed! This is also a right bargain.. and you can pick it up for £13

Supernatural Glorious Cleansing Balm*

This was actually my first cleansing balm that I used… and it is absolutely AMAZING! It does such a fab job at removing all your makeup… and this one actually has tiny beads in that help exfoliate your face! Now… I actually used this on my eyes too and never had any problems.. although I was slightly more careful to only use it on my lashes/eyelids and not get any product on the inside! This one has a yummy, fresh, lemon-y scent. Anything lemon scented has me obsessed! I find this one does leave a slight residue on my skin.. but as I am in the habit of double cleansing.. I don’t have any problems! This baby does such an amazing job at making my skin just GLOW! This one is slighter steeper in price at £36.. but if you are looking for a luxurious cleansing balm.. I highly recommend this one!

Micellar Water – Literally Like Water On Your Skin

I remember when micellar water became popular a few years ago (I am still to try the Bioderma though!). I find these work best when I want something quick to take my makeup off.. but still feel like its thoroughly cleansed in one step. Miceller water works by tiny molecules that grab onto makeup, oil, grime and dirt, allowing you to sweep it all away with a cotton pad!

How Do You Use Them:

I apply a small amount on a cotton pad and sweep this over my face first. I use one pad first to remove all the makeup, then a second one to remove all the dirt and grime. I sometimes even go in for a third time JUST to make sure. Then.. I do the same thing for my eyes… although I do press the cotton pad on my eye for a few seconds .. as I find this makes any stubborn mascara/eyeliner easier to sweep away. Honestly… with micellar water… your skin feels very refreshed and cleansed… so if you were feeling lazy… you could skip double cleansing!

They literally feel like water on your skin.. which means no uncomfortable, tingly, stinging feeling

This magical water really does remove every. single. trace of makeup!

There are different formulas if you have dry, sensitive or oily skin!

Micellar waters are so quick and easy to use.. so a definite if you find makeup removal a chore!

Micellar waters are slightly more affordable then cleansing balms

For me… micellar waters do not really help my skin look any more radiant or glowing after using them

You use up an AWFUL amount of cotton pads!

They can feel slightly drying on your skin after using them

My Faves

Garnier Micellar Water

I know this is SO many people’s fave micellar water.. it is affordable, works an absolute TREAT and is available for every single type of skincare out there! It does such an amazing job at removing all your makeup and making your skin feel so clean.. but I do find it has the tendency to leave my skin feeling slightly on the drier side

Caudalie Paris Micellar Cleansing Water*

This micellar is an absolute GEM! It has a slight lemony/sweet scent which I love so so much! Again… it is amazing at removing makeup and making your skin feel so clean… I find this one has a slight “cooling” sensation too…. which is what makes me love it slightly MORE than the Garnier one! I find that this one does not leave me with that dry feeling.. so it has been the one I have been reaching for! This is on the slightly pricier side at £30 for the full sized bottle… but I have been OBSESSED with the lovely feeling it leaves my skin with after using it!

SO … that is my run down of both cleansing balms and micellar waters… but which one do I prefer?

Honestly.. it has to be The Body Shop Chamomile Cleansing Balm… I just LOVE the way it makes my skin feel, how easily it breaks down all the makeup and removes every single bit of dirt on your face! I love that if I was feeling EXTRA LAZY .. I could even go without cleansing my face after. The scent is lovely and relaxing .. so you really feel like you are having a good pamper before bed! I really recommend it girlies… it is a definite WIN for me!

Let me know what your prefer… cleansing balms or micellar waters? Have you tried any of the products I have mentioned?

Thank you SO much for reading loves.. I really hoped you enjoyed this post.. you know when you just LOVE how your idea for a post turns out EXACTLY how you pictured it? Yep… that is how I feel about this post right now! Yay!

I will be off now loves… I am enjoying the beautiful sunny weather we are having and preparing for a BBQ!! I will see you all in my next one!

Lots of Love,

I’m definitely a double cleanse type of girl. I tend to remove the majority of my makeup with miceallar water, then get the rest off with a balm, cream or oil (depending on what is open at the time). I do really love the Garnier Micellar Water and The Body Shop Butter!

I actually enjoy taking off my makeup too. It’s weird…putting on makeup is such a great feeling but taking it off is equally great as well. Haha. I personally still use cleansing oils but I’ve heard a lot of great things about the Garnier and Bioderma micellar waters! I’m about to go on vacation soon so I should probably try out some cleansing balms …it seems more easier to travel with!

I love this post! I use the garnier micellar water but like you said don’t really find it makes me feel radiant after and I must be the only one to find that it actually stings my eyes slightly. I have another balm recommendation which I adore! It’s the lush ultrabland! Sooo good! But you’ve really made me want to try the body shop balm! Xx

  4. June 5, 2016 / 7:00 pm

I am using many cleansing products at the moment from foams to gels to micellar water. However, I haven’t tried a balm before and I know my skin would love it! 🙂

I really want to try the Body Shop cleansing balm as I’ve never tried a cleansing balm before 🙂

  6. June 6, 2016 / 10:12 am

I absolutely LOVE miscellar waters because they’re so easy to use and leave your skin feeling so fresh and clean! I’ve never actually tried cleansing balms before.. but I might just try it now!

I only got onto the cleansing balm hype a couple of months ago but I’m officially converted. Like you, I never use make up wipes anymore but I only use micellar water now if I’m feeling super lazy. 9 times out of 10 I’ll head to the bathroom and use my Lush Ultrabland cleanser – it’s my baby! x

I adore my micellar water. I know its super cliche but it just works so well! I usually use that to take off make-up, use it again to cleanse my face, then use a toner and put cream on every night and it really makes my skin feel amazing! I’ve never even thought to use a cleanser but seeing as you like it I may give it a try – I use up so many cotton pads with micellar water!

Fun, ha ha, I thought it was just me who spent ages enjoying me time while taking my makeup off! It really is so relazing. I never use wipes, they sting my skin. I use Garnier Micellar water and also No7 melting cleansing balm, that is so lovely. I do like the sound of this Body Shop one though!

I’m obsessed with cleansing balms too! This Camomile one sounds amazing, I’m going to pick up a pot when my Trilogy Cleansing Balm runs out! I’ve never really got on with micellars because my skin is pretty sensitive and they always make it feel funny, but I really like the sound of the Caudalie one!

Great post (also I love your photos!) xx

I love love love this post!! I really like your writing style and how you break it up by pictures. Now for the content!!

I use both too! I love cleansing balms. I am totally adding The Body Shop Chamomile Cleansing Butter to my list! It sounds so amazing! And I totally didn’t know they made a cleansing butter! And girl you crack me up!! I totally know the feeling of scaring your husband/partner. I scare my boyfriend every time I send him a picture of me removing my makeup haha!

I love cleansing waters. They seriously feel so refreshing on the face! I use them both morning and night. At night, they are amazing at removing any leftover makeup. In the morning, they totally wake me up and get me started for the day. They also remove any dirt from sleeping.

Thanks so much for writing this post and I am totally pinning it on Pinterest. Have a beautiful day love!

I swear my micellar water, can’t remember how I coped beforehand. I don’t own a pack of wipes either, they used to make my skin AWFUL. I definitely want to try a cleansing balm though! I’ve never seen one before. The Camomile one is one I especially want to try, I have been meaning to use more of the Body Shop too! xx

You got the body shop cleansing balm! How gorgeous is it? It’s clean my skin up loads though I do hate the greesy feeling afterwards, I do then use micellar water after to get rid of that ^_^ x

  14. June 8, 2016 / 7:05 am

Morning Saira!!!! =) Such a great post babe!! I love a good cleansing balm I personally adore Trilogy’s Make-Be-Gone-Cleansing Balm, seriously it’s the best stuff I’ve ever used to remove mascara!!!! Literally just melts it away all of my mascara without leaving me looking like a lost member of the panda family!!! It’s now my holy grail product along with The Body Shop’s Camomile Cleansing Oil!! I’m guessing it’s the same as the balm just in an oil. I use this to cleanse my face and I absolutely adore it!! So kind to my skin and just makes it feel so cleansed afterwards, I can understand why you love the balm so much!!! =)

I actually have a post about these two on my blog if you fancy a read ‘Why Cleansing Balms and Oils are the Best!’

Loving your work girl, keep it up!

  15. June 8, 2016 / 6:21 pm

I love using the Garnier Micellar Water, but you’re right, you do use a lot of cotton pads!

Never liked using a balm, found the ones that were raved by many bloggers contained ingredients that can aggravate acne prone skin!

Currently i’m using a cleansing oil from a Korean beauty brand which works like a dream! x

  16. June 10, 2016 / 11:47 am

I used to be a huge Micellar water fan but now I’m all about beauty balms! My favourite is the Neal’s Yard Remedies Wild Rose Balm. It’s so indulgent and hydrating.

This was such a fab and super super helpful post, sweetie! I laughed when I read your comment about scaring your hubby haha. Mine nearly jumped when I walked into the bedroom with Mask of Magnaminty on my face with “What’s that green stuff on your face?!” haha.
I am taking my makeup off with Micellar water and have been loving it but you’re right, it’s quite drying. I do use a moisturizer afterwards. I will definitely pick up a cleansing balm or two which you recommended, lovely! Found this such a handy post <3 <3 <3
Hope you have a super great weekend, lovely!

You are going to shout at me.. I use wipes all the time haha, I’m just too tired at night to take my make-up off properly.. I know i’m gross!

I’m trying to be better.. I think I’m going to try the body shop cleanser! xx

  19. June 26, 2016 / 7:34 pm

Currently I’m using none of them haha. I used to use micellar water but now use cleansing oil. I really wanna try a cleansing balm because I guess essentially it will be like a cleansing oil.
